Joel Peters is a studio musician living a contented - if uneventful - life, when he is approached by a mysterious stranger who asks for his help in locating a lost book that may have the power to destroy all of Creation. Joel isn't inclined to believe the man's story, but the foot-tall dwarf with ADD-like symptoms that appears after the man inexplicably vanishes convinces him otherwise.
Trusting the man, Joel and the dwarf travel to Alera, a world that has never heard of music. Here, Joel discovers that his guitar and his music give him incredible magical powers. While trying to master his newfound abilities, Joel must travel through a hostile landscape to a ruined city and learn why he is the only person who can find the book and save Creation.
