The synthesis of a possible thyroxine antagonist is presented. This substituted beta-phenylserine was prepared in order to explore the possibility that thyroxine analogs containing a hydroxyl group substituted for a hydrogen atom on the betacarbon atom might prove to be thyroxine antagonists.
