In order to make such direct control most efficient, all instruments must be maximally legible and the controls must be conveniently situated. Recent designs for navigation bridges of a navy destroyer and of different types of pilot vessels are used to illustrate typical problems and situations. The building of a full scale mock-up of a complete bridge is essential in order to handle the design as an integrated problem. Such a mock-up is extremely useful in discussion between builder, user and adviser.(See pp 66-69).
