✦ Synopsis

We discuss structural relations between the Tau Method and the Finite Element Method (discrete step h). For a Dirichlet problem in dimensions one and two, we show that the difference between the solution given by each of these methods is bounded by C h in the norm of the Sobolev space H 1(~).

Keywords--Finite Element Method, Tau Method, Spectral Method, Collocation, Theory of numerical methods.

The efficiency and computational accuracy of the boundary element and finite element methods are compared in this paper. This comparison is carried out by employing different degrees of mesh refinement to solve a specific illustrative problem by the two methods.
