heat treating rolled or forged steel we seek generalIly: I. To increase its softness, that it may be more readily machined ;

  1. To make it strong, that it may resist successfully the stresses to which it will be subjected in use ;

3, To make it hard, that it may resist wear or acquire cutting properties.

The corresponding heat treatments may be therefore described respectively as : (a) SOFTENING TREATMENT, (b) STRENGTHENING TREATMENT, (c) HARDENING TREATMENT.
