โœฆ Synopsis

IT IS intended to review briefly three topics, all concerned with dynamical aspects of crack propagation, and to outline some possible future developments in this area.

The 8rst topic relates to "self-similar'* cracks in an elastic medium, of which the 8rst examples were discussed by Broberg[l] in two dimensions and Kostrov[2,3] in three dimensions. The writer has recently formulated and solved problems which admit a displacement field u (t, x) which is homogeneous of degree Compendium can display an increase of fracture toughness with crack speed, even if the plasticity is rate-independent, and furthermore deduced plausible values for the limiting speed of a ductile crack, in terms of elastic moduli, yield stress, density and mean inclusion spacing. It would, therefore, appear to be worthwhile to study models of fracture which take more systematic account of microstructural inertia.
