consumed amounted to I -5% of the weight of the charge, and the nature of the product is shown in Table 11. These results show that 32.50/b of tar acids boiling above 235" c. were converted to phenolic compounds boiling below 233" C. Simultaneously 22% of the charge was converted to neutral, alkali-insoluble (hydrocarbon) material.

The work referred to above produced ' stepped ' curves when PH was plotted against mols. OCIadded. Thesecurvesare reproduced in Fig. I and it appeared that basic chlorides might be formed during precipitation at a slightly higher p~ than that required for precipitation of the quadrivalent hydroxide. On considering the use of calcium hypochlorite, the primary reactions involved may be teprcscnted : 6 Ca(OCI), + 6Hz0 --f IzHOCI + 6CaO + 6CaC1, f 6Hz0 + 1 2 0 6 &CIS + 12H20 + 120 --t 6Ce(OH), + 9Clz . . . . . .
