โฆ Synopsis
The available data on the open-circuit corrosion of metals in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (AHF), and, on the solubility of metal fluorides in AHF has been analysed with a view to bring out some fundamental factors influencing these processes. It is found that high lattice energies of the fluoride Fdms covering the metals during their open-circuit dissolution in AHF tend to herald low dissolution rates of the underlying metals. Also, the open-circuit dissolution rates of metals appear to be directly related to the magnitude of their cation radii. Similarly, metal fluorides possessing high values of cation radii show high solubility in AHF and vice versa. The significance of these observations is discussed in the general context of the importance of solid state cohesion of metal fluorides in influencing these processes.
