✦ Synopsis

Conclusions

This experiment indicates that normal Ss establish sets more readily and utilize them to a greater extent than schizophrenic Ss. Both groups were capable of (a) establishing adaptive set and (b) following the set procedure more frequently than could be expected by chance.

A trend was definitely indicated (from the pattern of test intercorrelations) that Ss who quickly established and utilized set in one test do so on the others. On all tests and in all treatments, the normals were always more adaptable to the problems than schizophrenics.

These results complement the findings of Shakow (Io, l') on perceptual-motor set and confirm the hypotheses of McCorrnack") concerning cognitive set in schizophrenic Ss. Our tests can present recurrent stimulation just as effectively as can Rodnick and Shakow's apparatus. They, in addition, seem to be well calculated to measure a patient's adaptation to environmental stimulation. A description of each patient in terms of his individual level of flexibility and rigidity of behavior is of great importance in the hospital or clinical situation.
