โฆ Synopsis
A relationship between tearing force and tensile properties is deduced by analogy with notched tensile failure and proves to be quite accurate in predicting the tearing forces of a wide range of materials. It is found that the elasticity modulus is a significant factor in the relationship and its role is investigated. A model of the tearing process is presented which seems to be a more accurate representation of the physical situation for many materials than those previously suggested. A simple analysis of the model leads to the relationship which is found to be experimentally reliable.

The material can fail by tearing instability when the elastic contraction is greater than the plastic extension due to crack growth. The effect of the local brittle zone (LBZ) on the critical crack tip displacement (CTOD) of a welded joint has been analysed and a theoretical model is established. It is shown that the CTOD depends not only on the toughness of the LBZ but also on the width and position of the LBZ intersected by the
Fracture toughness testing in the transition region often causes ductile tearing to precede cleavage fracture. The effect of ductile tearing on the fracture probability has in recent years become a subject of great interest. Briickner and Munz have developed a Weibull statistics based model to descr
