โฆ Synopsis
A consideration of possible forces involved during the muscle twitch leads to a differential equation whose solution rather accurately describes displacement as a function of time (Gilson, Walker and Schoepfle, '44). The particular solution was applied only to the so-called isometric situation in which movements of the muscle are reduced to a minimum.
An extension of the theory will be presented in an effort to show that the tension-time curve is independent of displacement provided the maximum deflection is small in comparison with the total muscle length.
The initially inflected "foot" of the twitch curve will be analyzed with respect to the contribution of viscous-elastic and inertia forces.
An attempt will also be made to reconcile the general theory with the perplexing latency relaxation described by Sandow ( '44).
