The behaviour of a panel of a strain softening material is examined as it is heated to high temperature. It is noted that overall failure can occur due to instability and that this will be the usual nw~de of compression failure in such structures. It is seen that a limited amount of cracking due to tensile stress can be a stabilising influence and it is suggested that thls should be recognized in design.
