✦ Synopsis
Graphite has been oxidized with the Staudenmaier reagent at 0°C over various periods of time. After dehydration over P>O, the oxidation products have been characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction and IR absorption spectroscopy. Their thermal decomposition has been studied by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis IDTA). The oxidizing capacities against KI in H,SO, solutions have also been measured. The observations are explained by an oxidation mechanism in three stages leading to graphite oxide. Key WordsOxidation, graphite oxide, thermal analysis.
