Today is my fifteenth birthday, and Iβm now taller than Lee; my muscles are bigger, and I believe Iβm stronger. Iβve decided itβs time for him to die.
After more than two years of planning, I know I can take him if it becomes a fight. I have every detail thought out. Tonight, will be fitting; he will die on the same day my mother died and on the day I was born.
We never celebrate my birthday because of my mother, but we never celebrate anything. When Lee comes in from the fields, I have plates on the table and dinner on the stove.
βWhatβs this?β the old man grumbles.
βDinner,β I reply. βI cooked us some fried chicken and cream corn.β
