According to one point of view the outbreak was not a chance occurrence but rather was evidence favoring the hypothesis that human leukemia could be mediated by an infectious agent.6.13 A second explanation suggested that, in view of the large number of American communities the size of Niles, the St. John Brebeuf epidemic could be considered a happenstance governed by the laws of probabili ty.3
