Certain inequalities arepresented, related to the Lz norms of the solutions to the vibrating string and heat conduction partial diflerential equations; in particular, an "L2 maximum principle" is derived for the heat equation, and similar inequalities for the vibrating string problem.

The description of the boundary element method, B.E.M., for transient heat conduction problems is given. A simple count of the number of function evaluations concludes that the application of B.E.M. to such problems can be expensive in spite of the good accuracy.
