✦ Synopsis

The thbory of },-radiation from oriented nuclei was developed by C o x, T o lh o e k and d e G r o o t 1) ~) 3) 4). In these papers general formulae were developed valid for any multipole order. However, for the discussion of experimental data it is useful to have more explicit formulae in which the coefficients are calculated for definite multipole orders of the radiation and a definite s~pin change of the nucleus. Formulae in this explicit form were given in the earlier papers 1) 2) (to which we refer for notation and normalization of the functions) for the angular distribution and polarization of the y-radiation and the change of the orientation parameters ]k for dipole radiation (L ----1) with nuclear spin change (A/" = 0, 4-1, and for quadrupole radiation (L = 2) with Aj = + 2. We give in this paper the explicit forms of the formulae for angular distribution, polarization and change of the [k for mixed dipole and quadrupole radiation with Aj = 0, -b 1, and the formulae for angular distribution and change of the/k for octupole radiation (L = 3) with zlj = 4-2, -4-3.

Several phenomena may be studied if nuclei are orientated in external or atomic fields at very low temperatures. We will discuss here the influence of such orientation on the/~-and y-rays emitted by radioactive nuclei. In the first place, the directional distribution of the emitted radiation may dif
