Abstract
The study of the condensation of water vapour at temperatures below 0°C. has been continued in a laboratory investigation along lines similar to those pursued by Regener, Findeisen and Cwilong. An apparatus has been developed which allows for the ultramicroscopic observation of the behaviour of individual condensation nuclei when fogs are formed in a small volume of air subject to sudden cooling by expansion. An attempt has been made by the use of only small expansions to simulate as closely as possible the conditions of temperature and humidity prevailing in the atmosphere. Particular attention has been paid to the problems of distinguishing between water droplets and ice crystals and of determining the conditions necessary for the formation of the latter. The apparatus has been used to examine not only the nuclei normally present in outdoor air but also various artificially produced nuclei, in an attempt to throw some light on the physical properties which may influence their behaviour.
