✦ Synopsis

Al&act---Phase sensitive detection equipment is finding increasing application in electrochemistry.

The neglection of various experimental factors inherent in the method can lead to errors.

This paper examines these factors and outlines the considerations which must be made if experimental results are to be interpreted correctly. Numerical simulation and experimental results are used to ilk&rate the type of artifacts produced. Some commonly observed but often ignored effects can be easily explained, which could extend the useful range of this type of device.

Several conclusions about the best experimental arrangements are drawn. Guidelines are given on the detection of certain types of errors. The pulsating bubble surfactometer (PBS) measurement of surface tension from the pressure difference across the air/water interface and the bubble radius is analyzed theoretically. Sample calculations indicate that deformation of small bubbles due to gravity introduces a small error in the PBS measu
