✦ Synopsis

The problem of defining N(E). the density of states. for mnlecular systems is discussed. I: is shown that a numeric evaluation of N(E) is often only npprorimntc, cvcn for continuous data, and is not well defined for quantizd systems. The application of Lhr: conccpl i~f density of SIB~F is discussed, particularly with rugirrrl to iilc RKKhl theory of uninwlwular rcnctions. The sum of states, W(E). and density of states curves arc ewluatcd for'sweral harmonic and anharmonic model systems and thu results discussed in order to illustrate the foregoing considerations.

This article analyzes students' main difficulties in learning the concept of the electric field. To carry out this analysis we have supposed that the historical study of the main qualitative leaps that have taken place in the construction of the theory of field may help to diagnose such difficulties

## Abstract It is pointed out that the density matrices of the ground state contain valuable information concerning the calculation of particle‐hole excited states. As an illustration, results on the nuclei ^16^O, ^20^Ne, and ^28^Si are presented, using small model spaces.
