Abstract

Although the map of mean annual rainfall in the Climatological Atlas of the British Isles is for the period 1901–30, those maps which illustrate aspects of the variability of annual rainfall have not been presented for the same period. In this paper, the relative variability for the standard period 1901–30 is mapped and examined, and compared with the 1881–1915 pattern. This is followed by a brief commentary on the distribution of years of highest and lowest rainfall, the percentage relationship between these extreme values and the average, and the extreme variability of the annual rainfall, all these also being for the period 1901–30.
