β¦ Synopsis
The mechanism of cellular convection during absorption accompanied by chemical reaction was investigated. It was found that the reaction rate had a considerable effect on the occurrence of the phenomenon in the case studied. The effect was proved to be quite analogous to that of the gas phase mass transfer coefficient on the cellular convection accompanying physical absorption. This conclusion explains the occurrence of the cellular convection during chemisorption even when there is a negligible resistance to mass transfer in the gas phase. i.e. with mass transfer coefficients in this phase approaching infinity.

A theory is presented for the determination of a number of physical constants which affect the fracture behaviour of thin plastic and viscoelastic materials. The theory is based on a relatively simple consideration of the energy balance in a tensile-test-strip with an edge-crack, The total energy n
