✦ Synopsis
The retention adsorption mechanism of n-alkane retention on open capillary columns coated with PEG-20M was studied theoretically and experimentally. For the given system, retention was described by a binomial absorptionadsorption equation. Adsorption retention of n-alkanes depends upon their adsorption on the gas-PEG-20M interface, but adsorption on the interface of the Ž . PEG-20M and the capillary inner wall solid support could be neglected. This was shown by modifying the inner wall and showing that this had little effect on retention.
