This report is concerned with an analysis of the influence of light adaptation on the response of the single photoreceptor unit in Limulus. The method consists in stimulating a receptor unit at a constant adapting intensity of illuniination arid adding short flashes of varying illumination, A IT, at various instants after the adapting intensity has begun to cause a. receptor response. Records are made of the discharges aroused in the particular nerve fiber connected with the receptor unit. These records reveal the increase which A 1 produces in the frequency of nerve discharge at various stages of the light adaptation process.
The experimental conditions have been described in detail in another paper (Riggs, '40). Two separately variable beams of light are focussed along the same path onto one onimatidiuni of the excised eye of Limulus.
