✦ Synopsis

The significant role of poly(viny1 chloride) as a support polymer in solvent polymeric ion-selective electrodes is briefly reviewed. This lays emphasis on the way PVC has contributed to the relatively high state of development of conventional ion-selective electrodes, microelectrodes, coated-wire electrodes and ion-sensitive field effect transistors based on liquid ion-exchanger and neutral carrier ionophore sensors. Also discussed are possibilities of using alternative polymer matrices for overcoming some of the shortfalls of the PVC electrodes.

Just over half a century has elapsed since the metal ion-sensitive glass analogue to the glass pH electrode was predicted [l] . Developments in sensor membrane electrodes in the first half of the period since then was slow, but this has been followed by phenomenal advances in the science and technology of the ion-selective electrode (ISE). These were stimulated by the introduction of cation-selective glass membranes which led on to various other electrochemical sensor membranes consisting of precipitate incorporated in a chemically inert material, monocrystals, pressed solids, supported liquid ion-exchanger and neutral carrier ionophores, etc.

## Abstract More than ten different approaches for improving the lower detection limit of polymeric membrane ion‐selective electrodes have been suggested during the recent years. In this contribution, their principles are briefly summarized with a focus to their general practical applicability. The
