✦ Synopsis

The effects of solvent and temperature on the decay kinetics of p-(dialkylamino)benzylidenemalononitrile

(1) and julodlnemalononitrile

(3) has been studied in glycerol and triacetin. The fluorescence decay curves of these compounds were non-exponential and varied slightly with wavelength. This is attributed to the existence of two ground state conformers and to reorientation of the solvent cage around solute molecules. The results were explained in terms of tram + cis photoisomerization.

Are the Felkin–Ahn and Cram chelate models reliable? These models predict asymmetric induction without consideration of solvent and temperature. However, the addition of __n__‐butyllithium to the __N__‐(trimethylsily)imine of (2__S__)‐lactal leads to __syn/anti__ ratios between 98:2 and 28:72 when p
