β¦ Synopsis
Absorption spectra measurements of rhodamine B m methanol and ethanol solutions in the absence and presence of several buffers have confmed the presence of two absorbrng species depending only on the actdtty of the alcohol solution. these ate the protonsted and the neutral forms of the monomeric solute. The earlier ~ncen~tiondependent studies in ticohol solutions are explained by the acid-base equilibrium rather than by the monomer-dimer equiliirtwn as previously proposed. It WS further shown that the quaternary ammonium group of the protonated form of rhodamine B associates a chloride anion resultif~g in a red-shift of the absorption band.
