Abstract

For measuring the solubility of a gas in a liquid at about atmospheric pressure a modified stripping method was developed. It was tested by measuring the solubility of hydrogen in benzene. With this method we measured the solubility of hydrogen in cyclohexane, decalin, phenol and cyclohexanol at various temperatures. We also determined the solubility of hydrogen in benzene‐cyclohexane mixtures. Within the accuracy of the experiment the solubility in the mixtures was found to be a linear function of the composition.

From the rate of expulsion it was found that under the conditions of the stripping experiments the solubility equilibrium was not established and that the mass transfer between the liquid and the gas was rate determining.
