Abstract

A method for the determination of the purity of a compound by means of a series of solubility determinations (described in the case of one impurity by Northrop and Kunitz^1^) has been shown to give

The number of main impurities present;

the percentage of each impurity;

the solubility of the compound;

the solubilities of the impurities.

The method which may prove very useful, especially in cases where the probable impurities are related com pounds, e.g., other members of a homologous series, has been applied with success to DDT (Dichloroโ€diphenylโ€trichloroethane) and to 22โ€ฒ, 44โ€ฒ 66โ€ฒ NNโ€ฒ oetachloroโ€diphenylโ€urea.

## Abstract A thermodynamic model is developed for the correlation and prediction of crystal solubility and purity when lattice substitution by isomorphic or nearโ€isomorphic impurities is the dominant mechanism that leads to impure crystals. The model is based on earlier observation that the purity
