✦ Synopsis

The interaction of the soliton center with repulsive and attractive interactions is investigated. This new type of coupling shows the particulate behavior of the soliton. New phenomena -absent for point particle objects -arise, such as bound or trapped states in the continuum, as well as lack of transmission through a banier for kinetic energies above the top. A numerical simulation of the system in terms of collective coordinates shows chaotic behavior as a function of the initial position of the soliton center.

The intra-channel collision of optical solitons, with non-Kerr law nonlinearities, is studied in this paper by the aid of quasi-particle theory. The perturbations terms that are considered in this paper are both of Hamiltonian as well as non-Hamiltonian type. The suppression of soliton-soliton inter

We compute velocity and the corresponding energy changes due to non-resonant interactions of protons with Alfv6n solitons. It is seen that the protons heat in the perpendicular direction but associated with this is a cooling in the parallel direction. \* ICTP (Trieste) Fellow under programme: 'Train
