Summary

Solitary ulcer of the rectum is an unusual disorder which presents only occasionally to the individual clinician. While the histopathological features are characteristic, the wide variety of naked eye appearances of lesions which the syndrome produces may make for clinical confusion, particularly since the lesions may be neither solitary nor ulcerated. We present here an experience of six cases which presented to the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow, over the period 1969–79 which illustrate the diagnostic dilemma and variety of lesions encountered.
