✦ Synopsis

Fluxing of 1-5 mm diameter droplets of molten Fe40Ni40B20 permits high undercoolings to be achieved prior to solidification onset. A series of microstructures increasingly far from equilibrium is found as the undercooling is increased. Modification of dendrite and eutectic morphology, and metastable phases are found. An amorphous phase was not formed directly from the melt, but may arise by annealing a metastable crystalline phase.
