✦ Synopsis

Fused silica fibers coated with polyacrylic acid were used to extract proteins. The amount of protein extracted is proportional to the concentration of the protein in the sample for very short extraction times (a few seconds) when the binding capacity of the coated fiber for proteins is low. Proportionality is also obtained when the extraction time is extended to several minutes, provided that the binding capacity exceeds the protein content of the sample. However, when the capacity is low these long extraction times favor the extraction of the more strongly adsorbed proteins. The mixture of extracted proteins was analyzed by micro-HPLC using columns based on a new continuous polymer bed technology.
