✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Natural photosynthesis serves as an inspiration for the development of sustainable fuel‐producing systems. Solar energy is utilized to drive redox catalysis energetically uphill, which allows the storage of electromagnetic energy in the chemical bond of a renewable fuel. Hydrogenases are metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible reduction of protons to hydrogen at high rates with only minimal driving force. The utilization of hydrogenases for hydrogen production by a range of approaches, from in vivo to artificial hybrid systems, is reviewed.
