✦ Synopsis

T he massive power outage was a combination of technical deficiencies and human error. The blackout proceeded through an evolution of precursor events that knocked five separate power systems out in the course of two and one-half hours. Next a cascading blackout plunged most of the northeastern corner of North America into an electrical island where demand exceeded generation. These events took place on a clear, hot afternoon with substantial solar resource over the entire affected area.
