## Abstract Using highβaltitude balloon soundings (1961 to 1968) and other data, it is shown that the most reliable maximum value of the solar constant is at present 1.94 cal cm^β2^ min^β1^, to an accuracy of 1 per cent. This value is observed with Wolf numbers between 80 and 100, below or above wh
