majority are acceptable none of these are outstanding and moreover their quality is extremely v a n e d 6 o m e of the line drawings are too detailed and have reproduced badly, others are so schematic that their value is questionable and several lack a scale. Many of the plates are far too dark and others, unforgivable in any textbook, are totally out of focus. Because the book is, in the author's own words, 'an introductory guide, intended primarily for advanced undergraduate courses', it is easy to criticize many of the generalizations contained within it. Additionally, I was most disappointed with the omission of Russian and German references and examples from their literature on taphonomy and palaeoecology. The latter in particular have contributed much to our knowledge and understanding of these subjects and its is a pity to not see them accredited.
