✦ Synopsis

Abstract

A novel coaxial‐like transmission line is presented in this article that offers many of the advantages of single‐mode waveguides but is implemented using conventional lithographic methods. On the basis of full‐wave simulations, a prototype “2.5‐D MicroCoax” was fabricated using soft‐lithography techniques with polydimethylsiloxane serving as the substrate material. In addition to width and gap dimensional control, the structure offers an additional degree of freedom by changing the center conductor's height, thus controlling the characteristic impedance and phase velocity—all without having to compromise performance. Simulation and test results confirm the design's single‐mode, low‐loss operation up to the de‐embedded frequency range of 12.0 GHz. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
