✦ Synopsis

The mechanism of sodium excitation b; collision with vibrationally excited nitrogen has been investigated in non-equilibrium conditions behind reflected shock waves. Experiments showed that the coupling between the sodium excitation temperature and the nitrogen vibrational temperature corresponds quite well with that calculated with the Fisher-Smith distribution of partial cross sections.
