Abstract

Sources of error in Canadian snowfall records are discussed, with particular reference to the six‐hour interval between measurements. Very slow rates of fall are usual at high latitudes and these cause β€˜traces’ of snow to be recorded frequently which are not included in precipitation totals. Experience on Ellesmere Island suggests that the contribution from these traces may form a high proportion of total winter snowfall, and a longer interval between measurements seems desirable.
