✦ Synopsis

The critical velocity to prevent upstream smoke flow in the event of a tunnel fire is an important part of the design of emergency ventilation systems. For tunnels with a downhill slope the critical velocity is somewhat greater than for the corresponding horizontal tunnel. This note presents experimental results from a study involving model tunnels with slopes between 0 and 10 degrees. A general slope correction factor is derived from these results.
