Carbon forms different oxides, of which carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are among the most widely studied chemical compounds. The most stable oxide with more than two cumulative double bonds, known as carbon suboxide C 3 O 2 (1; Scheme 1), was synthesized for the first time nearly 100 years ago.

The radius of gyration and "persistence length" of ply-L-alanine, calculated from small-angle x-ray stattering daia, have values of 56 A and 44 1, respectively, in dichloroacetic acid, and 78 A and -30 A in a 1 : 1 v/v mixture of trifluoroacetic acid and trifluoroethanol. This can be interpreted to mean that poly-Galanine exists in a relatively rigid, predominantly a-helical conformation in dichloroacetic acid and in an extended, more flexible form in the mixed solvent system.
