✦ Synopsis

Abstract

To perform agricultural drainage of clay soils under sugarcane monoculture, a new kind of slot drainage was developed. A special implement produces slots of approximately 6 cm width and 95 cm depth, which are filled with crumbly soil substrate. After heavy rain, a large amount of water will be discharged very quickly through these slots. Under the economic conditions of Cuba, slot drainage pays for itself within 3–5 years. Furthermore, time periods of inhibited harvesting machine operation are cut short, enabling sugar factories to operate with fewer interruptions. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
