Abstract
In this paper we suggest a method for loading a microstrip patch antenna with two capacitive reactances in such a way that beam steering over a restricted range can be obtained. We show that by varying these capacitances we can maintain a reasonable VSWR < 3 while steering the beam over about 45° in a cut positioned at ϕ = 135° (slant −45° linear polarisation). Such an antenna offers the prospect for refinement as an element in a thinned array for use in a base station array. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
