Jommy Cross es un slan, un superhombre cuya raza fue creada genéticamente para ayudar a la humanidad, pero que ahora es despreciada por los seres humanos “normales”. Generalmente los slans se mantienen alejados del resto de los humanos, pero eso no impide a la madre de Jommy llevarlo a visitar la capital Centrópolis, sede del poder del dictador del planeta, Kier Gray. Pero en su último viaje a Centrópolis, los dos slans son descubiertos, y la madre de Jommy es asesinada. Jommy, con sólo 9 años, sin saberlo, se ve atrapado en un complot para socavar el poder de Gray, que puede ser más favorable a los slans de lo que se pueda sospechar.
