Inner-shell photolomzatlon specrra 01 Hg, clusters (n d 6) have been obmmed with a molecular beam e'rprnment usmg synchrolron radlauon rrom the VUV storage nng a1 Orsay The phommnlzauon spectra exhlbu 1-0 strong au~o~on,unon resonances uhlch are red-shrred Nith increasmg cluswr size The present resulw are compared =lth s&d-swle r~p~nmemal dam which mdlcate Ihal the clusters ( Q Hg,) do no1 yes have metallic character. 1 Introduction There 1s increasmg mterest in applymg photororuzation experiments as a tool for probmg the stability and electromc properties of clusters_ Early studres on ultravrolet spectra of gas-phase clusters were done for van der Waals dimers and clusters [l-S] _ The bmdmg energies for (CS&, with II < 5 [2] and for (NO), [3], AI, [4] with n & 6 have been deduced from the photoionization efficiency curves m the threshold regron. Beyond the first ionizatron threshold the photoronizatron spectra of the monomer could exhrbrt strong autoionizatron lines conespondmg to inner valence excitatrons Less IS known about the evolutron of these hnes in the case of clusters The autoronrzing levels of the CS2 Rydberg series IV have been observed for (CS& up to n = 5 [2] _ This line is found to be broadened as n mcreases and this effect is attrrbuted to perturbation of the Rydberg orbitals by neigtrbounng molecules More recently Whrte and Grover [6] have recorded rnner valence shell photoiomzation spectra
