Application.
Liming and control of overtopping vegetation can be used to successfully establish hybrid poplar on clearcut forest sites in New England. While our ten-year total biomass yield (45 Mgha -1) was less than yields reported for more intensive practices on agricultural sites in other localities, we expect that tests of alternative clones, increased l~vels of lime and nutrients, and more thorough control of competition would narrow the yield gap. Intensive culture of native hardwood species should also be tested.
