✦ Synopsis

His artistic gifts came from this heredity, for he could draw well and had a deep sense of beauty and art. His hands were those of an artist, and such hands also befit a surgeon. Medicine was not his first choice. When he was a boy his father asked him what he would like to be when he grew up. 'A cavalry officer,' he said. 'No, my boy, I couldn't afford that: how would you like to be a doctor?' 'Oh, all right: plenty of riding and driving and cutting about.' For many years Horsley was a devoted member of the Artists' Corps, and he died a soldier, with the rank of full Colonel, fighting to save life and not to destroy it.
