✦ Synopsis


In 1888 I became an assistant to Dr. J o h n Murray in the Challenger Office and during the past twenty-six years I have been intimately associated with him and with his work. It is therefore somewhat appropriate that I should have been asked to write this Appreciation, and perhaps I may be forgiven if, at times, the per- sonal note predominates.

I found myself one of a smaller permanent section of a large body of workers, who were in intimate touch with their Director, Dr. John Murray. It is not too much to say that one and all of us worked hard and cheerfully, and that the work done was thorough, efficient, and conscientious, and yet those of us, who are still to the fore, will acknowledge that it was not that we were more capable or conscientious than any other similar set of men would have been or that we were watched or driven with an iron hand, but that the power Murray had as a leader, made us respect him and compelled us individually and collective to put our best into the work.

One thing that impressed us all was the practical grip that Murray had of the work he had in hand, so that it was never necessary for him to protect himself behind a veneer of superficial knowledge. Murray even in those days could afford to say "I dont know". Murray had still a great task before him and a task not without many difficulties surrounding it, the last but not least of which Internat. Revue d. ges. Hydrobiol. u. Hydrogr. Rd. VII.
