Sir James Lighthill, one of the great mathematical scientists of the 20th century, died close to the end of his ÿfth swim (over a 25-year period) around the Isle of Sark. He died of heart failure while undertaking one of his life's joys-long-distance swimming, often around islands. Few people know about the entirety of his activities (apart from his family), for not only was he one of the great polymaths, he was also involved in university and civil service management and leadership at the very highest levels, active in education from school to university and beyond, involved in the music and arts, but also concerned about the wellbeing of the many people who came into contact with him and his family Copyright ? 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
